SETRAC’s Medical Needs Vest or “Pink Vest” is designed with the Special/Medical Needs population in mind. Based on the idea of improved visual identification of a group of residents or special populations, such as Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Centers, Intermediate Care and Memory Care centers in times of planned or unplanned evacuations. The vest is polyester based, with a large splash proof PVC pouch inscribed with “Medical Needs” (13in x 10in, or 33cm x 27cm). The overhead design and side ties make the vest readily applicable to individuals with minimal movement.

The bright pink color ensures the vest wearer can be identified from a distance even among a large group of people, such as a shelter or extraction point and includes reflective striping along the shoulders and neck for improved night visibility. The clear front pouch can be used to store medical face sheets, medicines and care plans deemed necessary to that individual. The pouch is closed and secured by a zipper. If vest wearer is lost or wanders off during a stop, a person who makes contact can open the pouch and retrieve the face sheet or get in contact with the appropriate individual or agency. (Please note the pouch is splash proof, not waterproof, ensure documents and any medicine are enclosed in a secured zip bag within the pouch in case of water submergence)

An additional layer of personal and medical identification is possible using the vest, where color-coded cards can be inserted along the front of the pouch for visual differentiation of a special medical group. Examples of such medical groups include dialysis residents (purple), oxygen dependents (green) and memory care residents (yellow). Taking an example in a general shelter of 1000, the 100 residents receiving care under a certain evacuated agency are all wearing Pink Vests, with an additional layer of visual identification of medical sub-category without opening the pouch. A simple colored paper on top of the documents where it is visible through the pouch will work fine as well.
